The electrical sign sets off a series of occasions that result in crossbridge cycling between myosin and actin, which generates pressure. The collection of events is slightly different between skeletal, clean and cardiac muscle. This gap is known as the synapse. The neurotransmitter crosses the hole, binds to a protein (receptor) on the muscle-cell membrane and causes an action potential in the muscle cell.
